Already past the midpoint of the season, let’s take a look at some of the best matchups across different classifications involving East Tennessee teams for this week.

CLASS 6A
- Maryville (4-0) vs. Farragut (3-1) – With longtime head coach Eddie Courtney recovering from surgery related to prostate cancer, the Farragut Admirals beat down Morristown West to the tune of 45-14. Wide receiver Matt White is one of the most dangerous targets in the area and Farragut will be a force to deal with for many opponents. Unfortunately, Maryville may not be one of them. That’s not to say that the Admirals won’t be competitive and keep it close for a while, but the Rebels have been feeling themselves for a while now and I’m not sure when they’ll be stopped. The Admirals only lost by 11 in last season’s regular season showdown so who really knows.
CLASS 5A
- South-Doyle (4-1) vs. Carter (4-1) – Shawn Gary was inserted full-time at RB for South-Doyle against Anderson County and all of the sudden, the Cherokees have found their offense. S-D certainly had it clicking to the tune of 60 points on Sevier County last week. On Friday, they will host Region 2 foe Carter, who is off to a surprising start. The Hornets are already 2-0 in region play and know how to win in close games and carries a solid defensive unit that is ready for the challenge. If Carter can pull the upset, all eyes should be on the Hornets for their Cinderella of the Year potential.
- Knoxville West (5-0) vs. Hardin Valley (0-5) – This is definitely a rebuilding season for Hardin Valley, but it’s a game to watch for just to see how much more impressive the West Rebels can be this year. They have only allowed 14 points all season, with only seven of those being surrendered by the defense. Plus, QB Baker Dance has came into his own and combined with RB Isaiah Mattress, they’re one of the best duos in the area.
CLASS 4A
- Jefferson Co. (0-5) vs. Anderson Co. (3-2) – This mid-season inter-classification matchup isn’t exciting when it comes to records, but it’s a chance for the AC Mavericks to gain some confidence with a road win. If the struggling Patriots can get the upset, it would be very big for a team that’s going through tough times. In AC’s three wins, they have allowed a total of six points.
CLASS 3A
- Polk Co. (0-5) vs. Loudon (5-0) – Sorry for listing any matchup that appears it will lack fireworks, but I needed to mention the undefeated Redskins. Loudon is playing elite football and looks to repeat as Region 3-3A champs. QB Keaton Harig set the school single-game record for passing yards in a 55-21 win over Signal Mountain last week and could easily break his own record again this season.
DIVISION II
- Chattanooga Christian (1-1) vs. CAK (5-0) – After some mediocre season, the CAK Warriors are looking reminiscent of the elite squads the program fielded years ago. They travel down the interstate on Friday for a region contest against the Chargers, who will be playing only their third game of the season.
- Grace Christian (5-0) vs. Silverdale Baptist (2-2) – Staying in the same region, the Grace Rams and QB Cooper Riggs have been one of the most fun teams to watch in the first half of the season. The Rams usually have their groove on offense, but this year, have added a very good unit on the defensive side. They will host a Silverdale team who just got shut out by CAK last week.
- Science Hill (4-1) vs. Knoxville Catholic (2-2) – Catholic has only one win on the field this season, and couldn’t keep up with defending DII-AAA champs McCallie last week in the second half. The Irish have a big road showdown at Brentwood Academy next week and to have them prep, all they have to do is travel to face 4-1 6A Science Hill. After a season-opening loss to Elizabethton, the Hilltoppers have won four straight games by at least 20 points.
