Friday night was a much more competitive night than Round One. There were surprises in every classification except Division ll Class AAA where every favorite won. Today we break down all the surprises from Round Two.
Division l
Class 1A: There are two surprises here, but Oliver Springs is the biggest surprise. With a 5-5 record entering the playoffs they defeat perennial power Cloudland 35-12 to earn the right to play Coalfield in the quarterfinals. As we called it Gordonsville upset South Pitt 14-7 to advance where they will play Clay County.
Class 2A: Monterey smashed Hampton 40-6 in a game we all thought would be close. They will take on a York team that is rolling right now. Union city beat defending champion Westview 10-6 and will take on Huntingdon next week.
Class 3A: Dyersburg ripped Ripley 29-7 and continues down the path toward Chattanooga with a matchup with powerful Covington on tap next week.
Class 4A: Reb Bank beat favored Stone Memorial 21-6 and will try to defeat East Hamilton next week to get to the semifinals.
Class 5A: Springfield shocked unbeaten Munford 38-14 to set up what should be a tremendous rematch with top ranked Henry County. This should be one of the top games in the state next week.
Class 6A: Science Hill who entered the playoffs at 6-4 continued their winning ways with a 40-14 trouncing of Farragut. Next week they will take on an improving Maryville team that seems to have found their way.
Division ll
Class 1A: Not an upset but certainly a shocker. After being trounced in their first matchup, DCA took Friendship Christian to double overtime only to lose on a blocked extra point 14-13. Friendship will host USJ next week in a matchup people have been looking forward to all year.
Class 2A: CPA beat Lausanne 31-13 to prove once again that they are better than their record. Next up, Chattanooga Christian.
Class 3A: No upsets here and what a semifinal this sets up: MBA vs McCallie and Brentwood Academy vs Baylor. Four of the top 10 of all the teams in the state. Now this is exciting.
